What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is “fish” text used in typography and design. Lorem Ipsum is, in fact, a standard “fish” since the 16th century, when an unknown printer took a typeface and compiled a selection of typefaces on it. “Fish” not only successfully survived five centuries, but also took root in electronic composition, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularized in the 1960s with the release of Letraset typeface samples that contained excerpts from Lorem Ipsum, and again more recently with computer typesetting programs such as Aldus Pagemaker that used different versions of Lorem Ipsum.
Where does it come from?
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not a random set of letters. It comes from a passage of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, that is, it has more than 2000 years of history. Richard McClintock, a professor of Latin at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, studied one of the least understood Latin words – consectetur – from a passage of Lorem Ipsum, and in looking for the word in classical literature he found an unmistakable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (“On the Limits of Good and Evil”), written in 45 BC. This treatise on ethical theory was very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” comes from one of the lines in section 1.10.32.
The classic text used since the 16th century is below for anyone interested. Chapters 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” are also given exactly according to the original, together with the English translation made in 1914 by H. Rekem.
